Screening relates to specialised dynamic studies where the upper and lower urinary tract is evaluated (IVP and VCU), as well as the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract (barium meal/barium swallow and barium enema).
It shows the movement and structure of the internal organs. The direction of blood flow and velocities is determined using colour Doppler techniques. An ultrasound does not use ionising radiation.

Intravenous pyelogram
IVP
An IVP evaluates the structure and function of the renal tract (kidneys, ureters and bladder). It has largely been superseded by CAT scans.
Voiding cystourethrogram
VCU
With a VCU, a patient’s urethra and urinary bladder are observed while the person is urinating.
Barium swallow/meal
An upper gastrointestinal series, also called a barium swallow, barium study or barium meal, is a series of radiographs used to examine the upper gastrointestinal tract for abnormalities.
Barium enema
A lower gastrointestinal series is a medical procedure used to examine and diagnose problems with the colon (large bowel).
